Whin Hill Still Cider: Crafting Traditional Norfolk Cider 🍏
Whin Hill Norfolk Cider was founded in 1994 by two friends, Jim Fergusson and Pete Lynn, who started by making cider from surplus garden apples. Their passion for cider-making led them to purchase 1,000 real cider apple trees and some land to establish their own orchard. After months of searching, they secured a plot in the rural Norfolk village of Stanhoe, just ten miles from their base in Wells-next-the-Sea.
In April 2012, Jim and Pete retired and passed the business on to Mark and Lisa Jarvis, who have continued the tradition of quality and customer service. Three years later, they acquired a charming 18th-century barn and outbuildings in Wells, where they set up their cider production facility and shop.
Under Jim and Pete’s leadership, Whin Hill grew into a successful business with a loyal following. Today, all of the award-winning cider and perry produced at Whin Hill comes from apples and pears grown in their own orchards in Stanhoe, where the rich Norfolk soils and mild climate ensure exceptional fruit quality. The orchards cover 10 acres of cider apple trees and 3 acres of apples for juicing, with the fruit harvested using traditional methods each autumn.
Mark and Lisa have continued to focus on sustainability, creating a thriving, biodiverse environment in their orchards. Over the years, they’ve planted over 2,000 native trees and shrubs, and the orchard is home to a variety of wildflowers, including Cowslips, Salad Burnet, and Bee Orchids. They’ve also installed nest boxes for local wildlife, including tits, finches, and tawny owls, and maintained hives for their own honeybees, which pollinate the apple blossom each spring. The orchard also features a pond, home to frogs, toads, newts, and dragonflies.
