Sandringham Apple Juice - Howgate Wonder
Made from the finest single variety apples pressed and bottled on the Sandringham Estate 🍎🍏
The Howgate Wonder Apple tree is a large tree. Its apples are red streaked over a ground of yellow/green and so have that properly old fashioned look epitomised in fairy stories. The flesh is cream coloured and has a crisp crunch (try saying that a few times!) to it which you may appreciate when the apple is properly ripe because Howgate Wonder is one of those apples that bridges the gap between cooker and eater. Mainly used as a cooker it makes a worthy opponent to the more famous Bramley and differs from it by keeping its shape when cooked, a bonus for apple tarts.
Tasting Notes:
The juice is a pleasant medium dry. Gentle and mellow, with a light sweetness that’s balanced by a soft, underlying tartness. Smooth and refreshing, featuring notes of green apple, melon, and a hint of citrus. A clean and crisp finish with a subtle tang that leaves the palate refreshed and wanting more.
Sweetness chart: 2
Howgate Wonder apple juice is appreciated for its delicate flavour and approachable profile. It pairs beautifully with light dishes, salads, or enjoyed as a thirst-quenching drink on its own. Perfect for those who prefer a gentle, less intense apple juice.
About the brand
The Sandringham Estate spans approximately 20,000 acres, much of which is farmland.
During World War II, an additional 500 acres were ploughed to support the war effort under King George VI. It was King George who first planted apple trees at Sandringham, and the royal family's commitment to the farm has continued ever since.
The orchards were established in 1953, the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation, and have remained unchanged since then. In addition to filling the royal fruit bowl, the apples are used to produce Sandringham Apple Juice, which can be found on supermarket shelves.
Today, around 140,000 bottles of Sandringham Apple Juice are produced and distributed annually, including to royal garden parties at Buckingham Palace and Holyrood Palace in Scotland, as well as to the farm shops at Windsor and the Spaghetti House restaurants in London.
